The only real rule
Look at what you are standing on.
A barn wedding usually involves some part of the evening outdoors, on brick, grass or gravel, in the dark, at the end of a long day. Everything else about barn dress codes is style. This part is not.
It applies to the couple as much as the guests. A floor-length dress across a lawn behaves differently to the same dress in a ballroom.
For guests
What lands right.
- Cocktail or semi-formal is almost always correct unless the invitation says otherwise.
- Block heels, wedges or flats. Stilettos and a brick path are a bad evening.
- A layer for later. Even in Florida the temperature drops once the sun does.
- Lighter fabrics than the season suggests. Barns with 150 people in them get warm.
- Not white, and not head-to-toe denim. Rustic setting, not a theme.
For the couple
Things worth deciding early.
- A bustle, if the dress has a train. You will be glad of it by the first dance.
- A second pair of shoes for the reception. Nearly every bride ends up in them.
- Fabric that moves. Stiff structured gowns photograph beautifully and are long days.
- Suits in lighter weights and colors. Heavy dark wool in a Florida summer is a decision you make once.
