Hernando County

What you actually need to get married in Brooksville.

Six facts, all from the Hernando County Clerk. The paperwork is simpler than most couples expect, and none of it is the venue’s job to do for you.

The license

What the Clerk requires.

  • Both of you must be 18 or older.
  • Both of you must appear in person at the Clerk’s office with a driver’s license, state ID or passport.
  • The fee is $86. Florida residents who complete an approved premarital preparation course pay $61 instead.
  • Florida residents wait three days before the ceremony. That wait is waived by the premarital course. Non-residents have no wait at all.
  • Florida residents must read the Family Law Handbook either way.
  • The license is valid for 60 days. Marry inside that window or it voids and you start again.

The part that catches people out

Sixty days is shorter than it sounds.

Couples apply early because it feels like the responsible thing to do, and then the license expires before the wedding. Apply inside the sixty days, not before them.

If you are traveling in from out of state, the three-day wait does not apply to you. You can land, collect the license and marry the same week.

Where to go

Hernando County Clerk of the Circuit Court.

There are two offices, one in Brooksville and one in Spring Hill. The Clerk’s office is on (352) 540-6768 and the current fee schedule is published on their site. Fees and rules change, so treat this page as orientation and the Clerk as the authority.

A ceremony in the Clerk’s own chapel costs $30 if you want the legal part done separately from the celebration. Some couples do exactly that and then have the real ceremony here.

What we handle

The officiant, not the license.

An officiant is included in the package here, and they will sign and return the license after the ceremony, which is legally their job rather than yours. Collecting the license in the first place is the one piece of your wedding nobody can do on your behalf.

Everything else about the day is on the included list. If you are still choosing a venue, this is what Brooksville has.
