The practical part first
Outdoors, the ground decides.
Thin metal legs sink into grass and soft ground, and a row that started straight will not be straight by the time you walk it. Wider feet, a firmer surface, or both.
Weight matters too. Anything light enough to move easily is light enough to blow over, and staff will spend the cocktail hour righting them instead of serving.
What works outdoors
In rough order of how well they behave.
- Chiavari chairs — the standard for a reason. They stack, they photograph well and they suit almost any styling.
- Cross-back and farmhouse chairs — heavier, steadier on uneven ground, and they suit a barn setting.
- Wooden folding chairs — honest, cheap to hire and fine for a short ceremony. Less comfortable for a long dinner.
- Benches — good for a small guest list and a tight aisle. Harder for older guests to get in and out of.
- Lounge furniture — for a cocktail area, not for a ceremony. Nobody watches vows from a sofa.
Layout
Three decisions that change the photographs.
Aisle width
Wide enough for two people side by side plus a dress. Narrow aisles are the most common regret and they are free to fix.
Rows or a curve
A gentle curve means more guests can see your faces instead of the back of a head. It costs nothing.
Where the sun is
At your ceremony hour, not now. Guests squinting into low sun is a photography problem and a comfort problem at once.
